My full name is Karouna (pronounced “Ka-ru-na”) Sivilay. My first name means “passion” in the Thai language but some people simply call me “Kay”. I was born in Nongkai Thailand and came to California when I was 8 months old. I have 4 older sisters, (yes, I’m the baby!) and hard working parents who did a terrific job in raising us. We started with very little and now we all have college educations and great jobs. I had a great childhood and was constantly surrounded by family members. I grew up swimming competitively for 10 years and even placed sixth in the state for the 50 meter freestyle. Since my dad never had any boys, he turned my sister and I into champion swimmers. When I was in junior high, I was in something called “drill team”. My team was quite good and won first place in competitions throughout Southern California. I was still swimming year round at that time as well. I went to a math and science magnet high school and couldn’t wait to get out. I was always accepted in the “in” crowd, but never was a part of it. I was one of those students who was nice to everyone, but my intuition told me who was really my friend or not. To this day, my only friend from high school is my oldest friend, Cheryl Ann. (Love you!) From HS, I went on to become a pre-med student to pursue a career in dermatology. I even got accepted into UCLA. I took some time off to work for my tuition before transferring, and I got a taste of the working world. I value family life and realized that I didn’t want to sacrifice that to become a doctor. I would be almost 30 when I started my own practice! Now comes the modeling part. One summer, my cousin who works for a production team called me and asked me if I would be interested in trying out for a photoshoot for a movie. She told me that they went through stacks of headshots and still was not satisfied. They liked what they saw and ended up making 3 large posters of me for a scene in the movie! The photographer told me I should give modeling a shot. Lots of close friends and family also told me that I would make a great Playboy model. “Playboy needs more Asians” they would say. I’ve always admired the women of Playboy, so I decided to give it a shot. I sent in some polaroids of myself and waited. I was SURE that I was not going to get a call back. In fact, I went to the mailbox everyday, just to get my pics back to confirm the rejection. But Stephanie Morris from Playboy Studio West calls me and we set up my test shoot in Santa Monica in April 2003. The famous Arny Freytag took great pictures of me and to this day, Arny and I are still friends. It is now June and my pictures from Playboy still has not debuted, but I’ve already gotten many offers to do different projects! I’m very blessed that Playboy has accepted me into their family. In less than two weeks I’ve made friends with many of the models who are really great and down to earth. Those are the qualities that makes a person more attractive. Those are the qualities I find in all of my closest friends. Through Playboy I’ve met my FANTASTIC photographer and web designer, Bruno Talledo. I’ve gotten other offers to build my own website, but after seeing Bruno’s work, I told him on the spot, “Let’s do it!” (The website! LOL!) This beautiful creation of a website is all credited to him. What’s great is that we share the same vision in delivering these pictures to you...”Maxim meets Playboy”. Hopefully you’ll enjoy them as much as we’re producing them! |
